Charlotte Newman (1840-1927), also known as Mrs Philip Newman, was active between 1870 and 1910 and was a pupil and assistant to the noted jeweller John Brogden. Together they exhibited at the International Exhibitions in Paris in 1867 and 1878. She won a médaille d’honneur for her collaboration with Brogden at the 1878 exhibition. After his death in 1885, she incorporated his craftsmen and workshop into her own business. She was the first woman to be admitted to the Jewellers Guild in London.
